The most important requirements

Not everyone with hair loss is a suitable candidate for a hair transplant. The procedure redistributes existing hair roots — it does not create new follicles. The quality and available amount of donor hair at the back of the head are therefore decisive.

When a transplant makes sense

  • Stable hair loss: the loss should have been largely constant for at least 1–2 years
  • Enough donor hair: a dense back of the head with enough reserves for the density you want
  • Hereditary hair loss: androgenetic alopecia (Norwood scale) is the most common indication
  • A healthy scalp: no active inflammation or scarring alopecia
  • Realistic expectations: understanding that a natural density results, but not perfectly full hair

When caution is called for

  • Very young patients (under 25): the hair loss is often not yet stable — the pattern is still developing
  • Diffuse hair loss without a clear cause: internal medical assessment is needed first (diffuse alopecia)
  • Very advanced hair loss: little donor hair for many bald areas
  • Medical contraindications: clotting disorders, certain autoimmune diseases, uncontrolled diabetes

The influence of age and the stage of hair loss

The ideal age for a hair transplant is usually between 28 and 50. In this phase the hair loss is often stable and there is still enough donor hair. Very young patients often have to wait — the final extent of the hair loss cannot yet be foreseen.

Why an individual examination decides

No online diagnosis can replace a personal hair analysis. A reputable clinic examines the donor area, the recipient area and the future pattern of hair loss before it operates — and also says “no” where an operation makes no sense.
