Cataract Surgery in Croatia
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgical procedures in the world – with a success rate of over 99% and high patient satisfaction. The procedure is painless – patients can perceive light and movement, but no pain. Both eyes are usually operated on on two different days (1–2 weeks apart) to minimise the risk of infection. Visual acuity often improves as early as day 1 after surgery (80% on average), with further improvement to 95% after 7 days.
Your benefits
1. Restoration of clear, sharp vision
The main benefit of cataract surgery is the clear improvement in visual acuity: the clouded natural lens is replaced by a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens, IOL), which leads to clearer, sharper vision with more contrast. Patients often report a significant improvement in reading, driving, watching TV, shopping and recognising faces – often as early as day 1 after surgery (80% visual acuity on average), with further improvement to 95% after 7 days. Colours also look more vivid again, and sensitivity to glare (especially when driving at night) decreases significantly.
2. A permanent, lifelong solution – the cataract does not come back
Cataract surgery offers a permanent solution: the clouded lens is completely removed and replaced by an artificial intraocular lens that lasts a lifetime and does not become cloudy again. Unlike other treatments (e.g. glasses, which only compensate for the symptoms), the operation permanently eliminates the cause of the problem. An "after-cataract" (clouded capsule behind the artificial lens) can occur in rare cases but can easily be corrected with a painless laser treatment (YAG laser).
3. Faster recovery and minimal strain
Modern cataract operations are minimally invasive (incision only 1.8–2.2 mm), are performed as an outpatient under local anaesthetic drops and take only 10–20 minutes per eye. Most patients notice a clear improvement in their vision the very next day and can return to their normal daily activities within a few days (often 2–5 days) – including driving, cycling, walking, reading the newspaper, watching TV, shopping and cooking. The procedure is painless, and post-operative discomfort is minimal (slight scratching or foreign-body sensation for 1–2 days).
4. Improved quality of life, independence and safety
Restoring vision has far-reaching positive effects on quality of life: patients regain their independence, can carry out everyday tasks without help and take an active part in social life, hobbies and leisure activities again. Numerous studies also show a significant reduction in the risk of falls and accidents after cataract surgery – especially important for older patients. Mental health benefits too: many patients report a better mood, fewer feelings of isolation or depression and more self-confidence in everyday life.
5. Correction of other vision problems with premium artificial lenses
Modern intraocular lenses (IOLs) can not only treat the cataract but also correct other vision problems at the same time:
- Monofocal lenses: Sharp vision at one distance (usually far), reading glasses often still needed
- Multifocal/trifocal lenses: Sharp vision at several distances (near, intermediate, far), glasses often no longer needed
- EDOF lenses (Extended Depth of Focus): Extended range of vision with good intermediate distance
- Toric lenses: Correction of astigmatism
As a result, many patients can significantly reduce or even completely eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses after the operation.
How the treatment works
- Preliminary examination: biometry and choice of lens.
- Surgery: phacoemulsification under anaesthetic drops, 15 min.
- Aftercare: check-up the next day. Eye drops for 3 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions
What aftercare do patients receive?+
Patients receive treatment-specific post-operative instructions and information on how to behave after the procedure. The clinic provides its own documents and consent forms for this purpose.
How much does a treatment cost?+
The costs depend on the procedure and the individual findings. For example, the clinic publishes prices from 1.250 € for bilateral blepharoplasty, from 3.200 € for a facelift and neck lift and from 1.300 € for cataract surgery. These starting prices should not be understood as a binding final price; the examination, individual treatment, additional services and aftercare should be clarified in writing beforehand.
Can patients from abroad also be treated?+
Yes. For patients from outside Zagreb and from abroad, the clinic offers a dedicated process with remote consultation, travel organisation, assistance with accommodation and aftercare . The specific conditions should be clarified directly with the clinic or via GO Medics before booking.
How long does recovery take?+
That depends on the treatment. With minimally invasive procedures such as Botox or fillers, the recovery time is usually very short. After surgical procedures such as eyelid surgery or a facelift, the visible recovery phase can be approximately 7 to 14 days . After blepharoplasty, a return to everyday activities is often possible after about 7 to 10 days; complete healing may take longer.
How soon after the consultation can a procedure take place?+
According to the clinic, the time between consultation and procedure is on average about four weeks. The exact timeframe depends on the type and extent of the procedure and on the patient's individual circumstances.
