Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgical procedures in the world – with a success rate of over 99% and high patient satisfaction. The procedure is painless – patients can perceive light and movement, but no pain. Both eyes are usually operated on on two different days (1–2 weeks apart) to minimise the risk of infection. Visual acuity often improves as early as day 1 after surgery (80% on average), with further improvement to 95% after 7 days.

Modern cataract operations are minimally invasive (incision only 1.8–2.2 mm), are performed as an outpatient under local anaesthetic drops and take only 10–20 minutes per eye. Most patients notice a clear improvement in their vision the very next day and can return to their normal daily activities within a few days (often 2–5 days) – including driving, cycling, walking, reading the newspaper, watching TV, shopping and cooking. The procedure is painless, and post-operative discomfort is minimal (slight scratching or foreign-body sensation for 1–2 days).
