Hair transplant for scars in Slovenia

Basic principle

The procedure is based on the FUE method (follicular unit extraction): individual hair follicles are taken from the donor area (usually the back of the head) and implanted precisely into the scar tissue. The transplanted hair grows through the scar and visually interrupts the visible scar line or area, so that it looks like natural hair growth.

Typical areas of use

  • Scalp scars: after earlier FUT operations (a linear strip scar), accidents, burns or surgery
  • Facial scars: in the beard area after acne, injuries or surgery
  • Eyebrows: after trauma, over-plucking or medical treatments

Alternative or complementary treatments

  • Scalp micropigmentation (SMP): a non-surgical option in which pigmented micro-dots are placed in and around the scar to reduce the colour contrast and visually disguise the scar.
  • Scar revision surgery: surgical removal of the old scar and closing it again with special techniques (e.g. trichophytic closure) to create a thinner, less visible scar.
  • Laser therapy: vascular lasers reduce redness, fractional lasers improve the texture and remodel the scar tissue.
  • Combination therapy: FUE into the scar is often combined with SMP to achieve the best aesthetic results.

The top 5 benefits of a hair transplant on scars

1. A natural, inconspicuous look with your own hair

Transplanted hair of your own grows through the scar tissue and visually interrupts the visible scar line or area, so that it looks like natural hair growth. Unlike pigmentation, hairpieces or cosmetic cover-ups, the hairs move naturally, can be cut, styled and washed, and are barely distinguishable from the surrounding hair even when worn short.

2. A permanent, lifelong solution

Once they have healed in (about 3–4 months), the transplanted follicles grow permanently and stay in the scar tissue for life. Unlike temporary solutions such as scalp micropigmentation (SMP), which has to be refreshed every 2–5 years, or hairpieces, which have to be replaced regularly, a transplant offers real permanence with no ongoing maintenance costs.

3. Active tissue regeneration and better scar quality

Recent studies (2023, Imperial College London) show that transplanted hair follicles do not only work cosmetically but actively regenerate the scar tissue: they increase the density of blood vessels, improve the thickness of the epidermis and suppress pro-fibrotic cytokines (TGFβ1, IL-13, IL-6). This means a hair transplant on scars works at the same time as cosmetic restoration and as active tissue regeneration — the scar becomes softer, better supplied with blood and visually less noticeable.

4. Minimally invasive with fast healing

Thanks to the FUE method (single-hair extraction), only tiny dot-shaped scars (0.7–1.0 mm) are left in the donor area, and they are barely visible even with short hair. The procedure can be carried out as an outpatient under local anaesthetic, healing takes about 7–10 days, and most patients can return to their normal daily routine after just a few days.

5. Suitable for different types of scar and areas of the body

A hair transplant on scars is versatile and works for:

  • Scalp scars: after earlier FUT operations (a linear strip scar), accidents, burns or surgery
  • Facial scars: in the beard area after acne, injuries or surgery
  • Eyebrows: after trauma, over-plucking or medical treatments
  • Various causes of scarring: scars from accidents, surgery, burns or acne — the cause makes no difference to the procedure, as long as the scar has healed and is stable (at least 6–12 months old).
