Do I have gingivitis or already periodontitis?

Gingivitis initially affects only the gums; in periodontitis, the tooth-supporting apparatus is also damaged. Among other things, the dental practice measures the gum pockets, checks for bleeding and, if needed, assesses the bone on X-rays.

How advanced is the disease?

This cannot be determined from bleeding gums alone. What matters is the examination of each tooth, pocket depths, bone findings and personal risk factors. Ask for an explanation of your findings and of the planned procedure

Can periodontitis be cured completely?

Treatment can control the inflammation and often slow its progression. However, jawbone that has already been lost does not automatically grow back; to keep the disease from flaring up again, ongoing oral care and aftercare are necessary.

Can my loose teeth still be saved?

Saving the teeth is often possible, but not guaranteed for every tooth. Whether a tooth can be kept depends, among other things, on how much support has already been lost and on how well the inflammation responds to treatment.

What is done during treatment?

First, oral hygiene and visible plaque are addressed. The treatment team then cleans the affected periodontal pockets and root surfaces below the gum line. Afterwards, it is checked whether further treatment is needed.

Does deep cleaning hurt?

If needed, it is carried out under local anaesthesia. After treatment, teeth and gums may be temporarily sensitive; discuss possible discomfort and how to relieve it with the practice in advance.

How many appointments will I need?

That depends on how many sites are affected and how deep the pockets are. Examination, the hygiene phase and deep cleaning may require several appointments; the healing outcome is typically checked 8 to 12 weeks after the pocket cleaning.

Do I need antibiotics or laser treatment?

As a rule, thorough mechanical cleaning and good oral hygiene are the foundation. Antibiotics are only considered as an addition in selected cases; there is not enough evidence of a clear long-term benefit of lasers as a routine add-on. For every additional service offered, ask about its specific benefit and price.

Can my teeth be more sensitive or look longer afterwards?

Yes, temporary sensitivity can occur. As inflammatory swelling subsides, the gums fit more tightly again; as a result, the necks of the teeth may become more visible and the teeth may look longer.

What can I do myself to make the treatment a success?

Especially important are daily cleaning including the spaces between the teeth, regular follow-up appointments and discussing your personal risks. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes can make healing more difficult.

How often will I need check-ups after treatment?

Once active treatment is complete, supportive periodontal therapy follows. Depending on individual risk, the Austrian Society of Periodontology recommends intervals of about 3 to 12 months.

What does the complete treatment cost?

The price depends on the findings, the number of affected teeth, the treatment steps and aftercare. Ask for the hygiene phase, deep cleaning, follow-up examination, possible surgery and later aftercare to be listed separately in writing. In any case, treatment in Croatia at one of our partner clinics costs considerably less than in the DACH region

Can I start treatment abroad and continue it at home?

This must be planned between the dental practices involved. In particular, the check-up after 8 to 12 weeks and the subsequent regular aftercare require a responsible practice near your home if you do not travel back to the treating clinic for them. Ask to be given your findings, pocket depths, X-rays and the steps carried out for this handover.
