LASIK – laser eye surgery
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most frequently performed procedure worldwide for correcting refractive errors and one of the safest and most effective ways to say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses for good.
About the treatment
What is LASIK?
LASIK is refractive laser eye surgery in which the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) is permanently reshaped with a high-precision excimer laser so that light is focused correctly on the retina. The procedure corrects short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism and in most cases reduces or eliminates dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
What does the term FEMTO-LASIK mean?
Femto-LASIK (also called femtosecond LASIK, "laser LASIK" or "all-laser LASIK") is a modern further development of the classic LASIK procedure and is now regarded as the gold standard of refractive surgery for correcting refractive errors such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.
The only, but essential, difference between classic LASIK and Femto-LASIK lies in how the corneal flap is created. A high-precision femtosecond laser produces ultra-short light pulses (10⁻¹⁵ seconds = one femtosecond = one millionth of a billionth of a second) that form precise microbubbles in the corneal tissue. Through this process of "photodisruption", a wafer-thin, circular corneal flap with an individually adjustable thickness (typically 100–130 micrometres) is created within just 20–30 seconds. The flap is gently folded to the side – completely without a blade, without contact and with micrometre precision. In the next step, the vision correction is carried out with the excimer laser; the flap is then folded back and adheres by itself through natural adhesion – without stitches or glue.
Who is Femto-LASIK suitable for?
Femto-LASIK is suitable for patients with:
- Short-sightedness (myopia): Up to about -10 to -12 dioptres
- Long-sightedness (hyperopia): Up to about +4 to +5 dioptres
- Astigmatism: Up to about 3.5 to 4 dioptres
- Sufficient corneal thickness: At least 500–520 micrometres (depending on the strength of the correction)
- Stable prescription: No change in dioptre values for at least 1–2 years
- Age: From 18 (better from 21), no upper limit with healthy eyes
Success rate and safety
Over 95% of patients achieve a visual acuity of 100% (20/20) or better after Femto-LASIK – a life without glasses or contact lenses is possible for most patients. The procedure is considered safe, precise and proven, with a complication rate of less than 1% (about 0.1–0.3%).
How the treatment works
- Preliminary examination: detailed measurement of your eyes. Check of LASIK suitability.
- Surgery day: 20 min. per eye. Anaesthetic drops — no injections, no pain.
- Follow-up: check-up the next day. Then fit to fly home.
